Pregnancy Can Change Pigment — Not Just Texture

Hormonal shifts during pregnancy can increase melanin production. Medical reviews describe hyperpigmentation as one of the most common physiologic skin changes of pregnancy, and it can be especially noticeable in melanin-rich skin. Common changes include a darker linea nigra on the abdomen, deeper color around the nipples and areolae, inner-thigh or underarm darkening, and melasma on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and around the nose.

Belly + Linea Nigra The midline of the abdomen commonly darkens during pregnancy. Pigment often softens after birth, but it may take months and may not completely return to its pre-pregnancy shade.
Face + Nose Melasma can create symmetrical brown or gray-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and nose. UV and visible light can deepen pigment.
Neck + Body Folds Hormonal change and friction can make the neck, underarms, and inner thighs look darker. If the skin also becomes noticeably thick or velvety, ask your medical provider or dermatologist about acanthosis nigricans rather than trying to scrub it away.
Hands + Knuckles Pre-existing pigment can become more noticeable, and darker, thicker or velvety areas can also appear on the hands or knuckles. New or unusual changes deserve clinical evaluation.

A gentler evidence-informed approach

For pregnancy-related pigment, the goal is not aggressive “lightening.” A low-irritation routine helps protect the skin barrier and reduces the chance that inflammation itself will leave additional dark marks. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection is important for melasma. Research also suggests that tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides can add protection against visible-light-induced pigmentation, which is particularly relevant for medium-to-deep skin tones.

Ingredient awareness during pregnancy: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, review new active ingredients with your OB-GYN, midwife, or dermatologist. Evidence Based Birth’s review of essential oils notes that these oils are highly concentrated compounds; some can cause skin irritation or allergic contact dermatitis, and safety depends on the specific oil, dilution, route, and pregnancy context.

When to ask a clinician

Seek medical guidance for sudden or widespread pigment change; dark skin that becomes thick or velvety; a new or changing mole; pigment with significant itching, pain, bleeding, or rash; or any skin change that concerns you. Cosmetic products cannot diagnose or treat melasma, acanthosis nigricans, diabetes-related skin changes, or other medical conditions.
